He might be able to write comedy scripts but Chris O’Dowd admits that he found learning to play the piano very challenging.

The Bridesmaids star had to master the instrument and learn to sing for his latest film role in The Sapphires in which he plays the manager of a female singing group.

Chris had to sing and play the piano for his latest big screen role.

“I didn’t have a clue how to do it beforehand, so I had to learn it pretty quickly,” he said before describing his unconventional learning approach.

“And far from the romance of the ballrooms in the 1960s, I was teaching myself while I was working on another job at the time.

“So I was flying from Sydney to LA and teaching myself how to play the piano on an iPad app, which didn’t really feel in keeping with the beautiful nature of soul music,” the 33-year-old actor added.

What may have been Chris’ saving grace was the fact that he was a fan of the genre already: “I’m big into soul music and coincidentally at the time, I had been listening to a lot of soul music and gospel music – a lot of early Sam Cooke, Al Green and that sort of stuff.”

Although it was also revealed that he didn’t need any singing lessons so he is still pretty close to being perfect!
