David Beckham has given permission for his name and image to be used in a Bend It Like Beckham musical.

The stage show will be an adaptation of the 2002 film of the same name, which was a massive hit in the UK and US and made stars of Keira Knightley and Parminder Nagra whose characters play in a women’s football league.

Now here comes the bad news… the 37-year-old handsome family man won’t appear in he show but for a few pieces of footage of his most famous free kicks.

There could even be a song dedicated to the soccer hero.

Director Gurinder Chadha, who sat in the director’s chair for the film, will direct the musical as well.

Howard Goodall, who has created the music, and Charles Hart, who wrote the lyrics to Phantom of the Opera, will write the lyrics.

The musical is expected to hit stages until 2014.

Beckham will be joining his wife Victoria as a musical act, as the musical for her former pop group Spice Girls came out this week.

The 38-year-old fashion designer attended the premiere of Viva Forever! with her husband and their three sons, Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, 10, Cruz, seven, at London’s Piccadilly Theatre this week.

Ahh, we love a family man…
