Film director Bryan Singer (48), who is best known for his work on The Usual Suspects as well as the X-Men film franchise, has been accused of sexually abusing a teenage boy 15 years ago.

According to reports this morning, a civil suit was filed in the US District Court in Hawaii earlier this week alleging that Singer offered the aspiring actor, Michael Egan (now 31), a role in a film if he gave into his sexual demands.

The plaintiff, who was 16 or 17 years old at the time of the alleged abuse, claims that the filmmaker “manipulated his power, wealth, and position in the entertainment industry to sexually abuse and exploit the underage Plaintiff through the use of drugs, alcohol, threats and inducements which resulted in Plaintiff suffering catastrophic psychological and emotional injuries”.

Singer’s representative is quoted by CNN as saying the accusations are “completely without merit”. He added: “We are very confident that Bryan will be vindicated in this absurd and defamatory lawsuit. It is obvious that this case was filed in an attempt to get publicity at the time when Bryan’s new movie is about to open in a few weeks”.
