Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon and her husband Jim Toth were arrested and put in jail for a brief period after he was pulled over under suspicion of drink-driving.
Forty-two-year-old Jim is now facing a charge on drink-driving after he was spotted driving in the wrong lane on Friday morning, HeatWorld reports.
Thirty-seven-year-old Reese was arrested for disorderly conduct.
Variety reports that the actress was handcuffed after disobeying an officer who told her to stay inside the vehicle.
The police report describes the car as drifting across the road’s markings. When the couple were pulled over, Jim appeared “disheveled” and smelt of alcohol.
The report then read that Reese:
“began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe I was a real police officer.”
She was told to get back into the car but she got out and refused to obey the policeman’s orders.
Reese attended the premiere of her film Mud last night.
The report continues:
“Mrs. Witherspoon asked, ‘Do you know my name?’ I answered, ‘No, I don’t need to know your name.’ I then added, ‘right now.’ Mrs. Witherspoon stated, ‘You’re about to find out who I am.’ “
Reese’s representative has not commented on the incident.
The pair are set to appear in court today.
UPDATE:
Actress Reese Witherspoon has released a statement regarding the arrest.
Witherspoon said: “Out of respect for the ongoing legal situation, I cannot comment on everything that is being reported right now.
“But I do want to say, I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said. It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse.
“I was disrespectful to the officer, who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police, and I’m very sorry for my behaviour.”
