Chris O’Dowd’s star has seriously been sky-rocketing over the past year or so and now the cheeky chap has been given the ultimate prestige: he’s been awarded the Freedom of Roscommon.

The actor, who gives a nod to his hometown in his Twitter screen name, took to the social networking website yesterday to announce the honour.

We’re not sure if the award does involve maidens, but we can tell you that the title acknowledges the contribution of certain people to the lives of cities and towns in Ireland.

Chris contributed to the county of Roscommon by bringing fame to his hometown of Boyle by basing his hit sitcom Moone Boy in the area. How nice of him, right?

According to officials, the television series has put the small town on the world map and has worked wonders for the tourism trade as huge numbers of visitors have started coming to the town to see sights from the programme. Oh and this surge in visitors has also increased local employment.

On a more serious note, Chris later tweeted:

G’wan Chris, we definitely think you deserve it. Does this mean we have to start calling you Mr Freedom now?
