Charismatic Clinton: The Next Irish President?

Tall, charismatic, intelligent, a bit of a silver fox… we are positive if this man was our President we could nab any kind of bail-out deal we wanted from Europe, he would have the straight-laced Angela Merkel in shy giggles…

“Angela Merkel thinks we’re at work”… Angela Merkel wouldn’t care if we were at work!

The man in question is former US president Bill Clinton. He announced yesterday that he could, in theory, run for the Áras.

But would he want to?

We think he’d enjoy an elongated trip to our Emerald Isle. Clinton has graced the shores of our small island several times, the most recent being his trip to Cork during the summer when he arrived in Cork Airport, golfing bag in tow.

Clinton had his priorities set. He was a guest of honour at the Worldwide Ireland Funds’ annual conference in the Castlemartyr Resort but he knew he’d get the chance to try out some of Ireland’s distinct, rugged, framed-by-a-view golf courses.

The 66-year-old, who served two terms in the White House from 1993 to 2001, explained yesterday how his Irish heritage made him eligible to go for the Presidency here.

Clinton also said the fact that he was born in Arkansas means he could also bid for the French presidency, but admitted his bad French would make him “toast” in an election there.

He told CNN; “The only two countries I’m eligible to run for the leadership position is if I move to Ireland and buy a house, I can run for president of Ireland because of my Irish heritage.

“And France because I was born in Arkansas, which is part of the Louisiana Purchase.”

The Louisiana Purchase was land which the US bought from France in 1803 to settle French territorial claims.

It sounds like Clinton’s being doing some research.

Whatever about climbing the popularity polls in France, we’re pretty sure Clinton wouldn’t even need a campaign poster in Ireland before he’d shoot up the voting ranks.

Clinton played a major role in the Peace Process and we think he’d do a great job of running the country…

Of course, right now though, hats off to President Michael D!
