Marian Keyes is one of Ireland’s best loved authors but it’s not just her laugh-out-loud plots, vivid character descriptions or witty observations that make her one of our faves – it’s also her honesty and the fact that she never tries to hide her real life issues.

The award-winning Dublin author who has written 12 novels and three works of nonfiction has sold over 22 million copies of her work worldwide and classics such as Rachel’s Holiday, Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married and This Charming Man have been translated into 32 languages but it’s not her literary achievements we’re celebrating – today marks Marian’s 19th year sober.

The prolific Tweeter took to the social networking site this morning to tell fans the happy news saying “*whispers* I’m 19 years sober today…”

Cakes cure everything! A girl after our own hearts

Having suffered from bouts of alcoholism and clinical depression in the past, Marian checked into the Rutland Centre, a Dublin rehabilitation facility in 1995 and has never tried to hide her mental health issues from fans helping to remove the stigma that still surrounds illness.

And, although the Dublin based writer took a long break from writing due to a severe bout of clinical depression, her book Saved by Cake which was published in February last year contains an honest account of how baking helped her feel better while she was down and some yummy original Marian recipes thrown in for good measure.

Could she get any more lovely? Marian, we heart you.
