Sinead O’Connor has claimed that she suffered abuse at the hands of her late mother. According to the singer, her mother would beat her with sweeping brushes, hockey sticks and even poured hot water over her skin.
The Irish Daily Star is reporting that controversial singer O’Connor said that the abuse by her mother Marie, who was killed in a car accident, eventually forced her into running away from home when she was just 13 years old.
This is the first time that Sinead has openly spoken about the ill treatment she received in her childhood and teenage years.
“It always involved me taking my clothes off,” said Sinead.
Sinead described how her mother would hit her with “sweeping brushes, shoes” and “toilet brushes” and stated that her mother would also stamp, elbow and jump on her.
“It also involved a lot of pouring on me of things like muesli, coffee, hot and cold water, flour, basic kitchen contents,” Sinead added.
Sinead has spoken openly about her childhood and detailed the abuse which took place.
Sinead, who is known for ripping up a picture of Pope John Paul II on US TV in 1992, also admitted in a recent interview with Hot Press that the picture in question originally belonged to her mother.
“You’d lie there after she had finished and gone to bed and then you’d clean up the kitchen, set the table for the morning and go to bed. You’d get up for school and come home to that sh*t nearly every day,” said Sinead.
“She’d make me beg for mercy. I’d have to say I’m evil. The thing that affected me most was her making me say: ‘I am nothing. I am nothing,’ over and over. This sh*t went on for years. I ran away at 13,” she added.
Despite the abuse and suffering for her younger years, Sinead claimed that she still loved her mother and dedicated songs to her at concerts in the past.
