Twenties With a Twist – Get the Gatsby Look

Style your crowning glory with inspiration from with one of the hottest movies of the year.

Rebecca McKnight

It’s one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and if there’s ever been a director you can trust to put on show it’s Baz Luhrmann.

Lurhmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, due in cinemas next month, has tongues wagging already about the cast, the music and the style, and half the battle in getting such story right on the big screen is perfecting the look.

Much has already been made of how to get that signature 1920’s flapper look, but what of the hair?

Getting the locks right fell to hair designer Kerry Warn. The core cast and hundreds of extras needed to nail the look of the decade, but in a unique way.

It’s a big ask, but Warn is used to the challenge, having already worked on high-profile productions Nine, Australia and The Golden Compass.

Working with Luhrmann, as well as Academy Award-Winning production and costume designer Catherine Martin, Warn designed hairstyles for the film inspired by the looks of the Jazz Age but with a contemporary twist.

“The ‘20s have been done so beautifully in so many films”, says the hair designer.“After discussions we decide to keep a modern twist, that we’d do our interpretation of the ‘20s.”

For the female cast, including beautiful Carey Mulligan, who stars as Daisy Buchanan, Warn updated the classic bob, which was the defining look of the era. Warn gave Mulligan’s fringe a softness, updating it from the more familiar 1920s Louise Brooks fringe.

For large party scenes, Warn and his team of hairstylists were required to style up to 300 female extras, many of whom had long hair which was then styled into finger waves. “The girls could dance – and they were brilliant dancers – even do cartwheels, and their hair wasn’t going anywhere.”

So what’s the key to nailing the look? Happily, it’s all down to products even our small beauty budgets can stretch to, as Warn used John Frieda products to style the impressive cast.

Key products used for The Great Gatsby were:

John Frieda Luxurious Volume Blow Dry Lotion Root Booster to set hair €6.31

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Original Serum €7.03

John Frieda Frizz-Ease Spiral Style Spray Gel €6.31

John Frieda Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Firm Hold Hairspray €6.31

At that rate we’re straight off to buy and get our very own Daisy look. Getting our very own Leo might prove *slightly* more difficult…
