Ingrown hairs are something we all deal with, whether we like it or not.
There are those of us who leave them alone and pray they'll sort themselves out and then there's the others who love nothing more than prodding at them.
If you're the latter, this article is for you. We probably all know by now, whether we want to hear it or not, the prodding we all love is not the best idea. It can be harmful to our skin and lead to infections.
According to a survey commissioned by Venus Gillette, 30% of those who shave their bikini area say ingrown hairs are the biggest obstacle they face.
Ingrown hairs are the bumps that form on our skin when a hair grows back on itself. They can often be itchy and sometimes fill with puss.
They occur when a follicular opening becomes clogged by skin cells and traps the hair. It typically happens more often with coarse hair.
So how do we get rid of them?
Getting rid of ingrown hairs is a lot easier than we think.
Ensuring we exfoliate the area where the ingrown has appeared is key. This helps unblock the follicles and the hair can release itself naturally.
The best piece of advice is to not squeeze it, no matter how bad the urge is.
If exfoliating doesn’t work, hairs close to the surface of the skin can be helped out with a tweezers.
It’s important to note here that if it’s any deeper, leave it alone. Trying to dig it out will only lead to folliculitis and become inflamed and infected.
If this happens, the best thing to do is dab on an antibacterial treatment to calm it.
