The skin barrier has become a hot topic in the beauty world, and for good reason

“The skin barrier functions like a filter and works to protect our body’s largest organ”

Maintaining a strong and healthy skin barrier is essential for glowing, resilient skin

So, to understand it’s importance, we spoke with Jennifer Rock, founder of Skingredients, who explained just how vital it is to overall skin health.

“It’s extremely important for the wellbeing of your skin! The skin barrier functions like a filter and works to protect our body’s largest organ (the skin) from daily aggressors, pathogens, and irritants, whilst additionally keeping nourishment and moisture locked inside,” she says.

However, daily exposure to pollution, over-washing, and sun damage can weaken this protective layer.

“Studies have also revealed that low humidity and low temperatures can lead to a decrease in our barrier function, leading to less protection from external stressors,” Rock explains.

“This means the skin barrier may need extra support during the winter season to avoid issues such as redness, dehydration, irritation, and to prevent too much transepidermal moisture loss.”

A compromised skin barrier can manifest in a number of ways, so knowing the signs is key to addressing the issue early.

“You may find that your skin feels tight, dry, or irritable. You may also find that your skin does not tolerate your usual products as much as it did,” says Rock.

Thankfully, repairing and strengthening the skin barrier is possible, and Rock recommends a holistic approach.

“Building up the skin barrier is possible, and you can help your skin become more resilient by starting inside. I suggest taking an inside, outside, and on-top approach to taking care of the skin. This means being mindful of your diet and water intake, as well as lifestyle factors.

“Ensure that you are drinking plenty of water and eating a balanced diet, including essential fatty acids. A food supplement can also be a good way to ‘top up’ your nutritional levels.”

Hydration plays a major role in supporting the skin barrier, as a weakened barrier allows for additional moisture loss.

“This can lead to further dehydration and cause rough-textured skin, dullness, and a lack of plumpness,” Rock explains.

“Mitigate this by investing in skincare with restorative and nourishing ingredients such as ceramides, hyaluronic acid, and niacinamide. I recommend the award-winning Skingredients Skin Good Fats Ultra Hydrating Ceramide Moisturiser (€49), which has been described as a ‘hug in a tub’ for good reason!

“The ceramide-infused barrier balm melts on dry skin, instantly comforting and balancing moisture levels.”

While exfoliation can help keep the skin smooth and radiant, Rock advises people to be careful. “Be mindful not to over-exfoliate in a quest for a dewy glow,” she warns.

“Pick exfoliating acids such as lactic and glycolic acids over physical exfoliators and scrubs that can be rough and damaging to the skin barrier.

“Skingredients AHA Cleanse Brightening + Exfoliating Lactic Acid Cleanser (€31) contains lactic acid alongside polyhydroxy acid—another gentle exfoliating acid that has humectant abilities, meaning it attracts and retains moisture within the skin.”

Antioxidants are another key component of a strong skin barrier, helping to protect against environmental damage.

“Boost your skinmunity and protect your skin from oxidative stress by making sure that your skincare regime includes antioxidants such as vitamin C and niacinamide,” says Rock.

“I may be a little biased, but I adore Skingredients Skin Veg Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum (€55.00), which contains fruit, vegetable, and botanical extracts to provide optimal antioxidant defense.”

Finally, no skin barrier routine is complete without SPF. “You knew it was coming! Of course, you need to protect barrier and skin health from the harmful effects of UV exposure with the year-round application of sunscreen,” Rock says.

“Skingredients Skin Shield Moisturising + Priming SPF50 PA+++ is an award-winning SPF that not only offers broad-spectrum protection from UVA, UVB, and HEV rays but doubles as a peachy tinted primer!”
