Like most women, we have an appreciation of the transforming powers of make-up.
It comes in very handy when you’re not feeling your best… if you’ve had a bad night’s sleep, concealer will help with those dark circles.
Mascara brightens up tired eyes and a slick of red lipstick will instantly change your day make-up to a party perfect look.
That said, there are a few things that annoying things about using make-up…
Lipstick on your teeth
This is definitely one of the worst make-up blunders around, lipstick is generally used to glam up your look even if you’re dressed causally. However, if it ends up on your teeth you just end up looking ridiculous, it’s often enough to put you off using it. Particularly red, red-stained teeth look like your gums are bleeding… never a good look.
Poking yourself in the eye with a mascara brush
Don’t say this hasn’t happened you… we’ve all been there. It hurts, of the OUCH variety. If this happens, you often end up with bloodshot watery eyes and your make-up is effectively ruined. Mascara application requires full concentration especially if you’re in the habit of applying multiple coats.
Foundation tidemarks
These are definitely a pet hate, foundation requires meticulous blending and even then it’s very difficult to avoid those pesky marks. They tend to appear at your jaw-line and are a tell-tale giveaway that you’re wearing make-up. Sponges and foundation brushes can help to apply your base and always remember to blend, blend and blend again.
Bronzer breakage
There’s nothing more annoying than going to apply your face for the night and realising your favourite and very often expensive bronzer has crumbled into tiny pieces, ruining your white make-up bag and effectively flushing your money down the drain. You can hear the woman in question roar “NOT AGAIN” from miles away when this happens.
Hair sticking to lipgloss
Although lipgloss is a popular make-up item it has a few downfalls. One particularly annoying one is that hair tends to stick to it and hair in mouth isn’t exactly the best look. Given that Ireland can be quite a blustery country, use lipgloss at your own discretion i.e not when walking to work.
The smoky eye doesn’t quite go to plan…
Although great in theory, smoky eyes can be quite difficult to get right. The correct mix of shades and you achieve a sultry look but if you use a heavy hand… well let’s just say that the panda look isn’t one we would opt for any time soon. Neither is a black eye for that matter.
Chipping nails
Pretty nails are the ultimate finishing touch to any ensemble, when your nails are painted you instantly feel more polished. That is, until they start to chip and then your DIY paint job looks less sleek and more sloppy. A base coat and top coat are essential if you want your manicure to last more than a couple of days.
False eyelashes falling off
This equals embarrassment of epic proportions, you finally achieve that fluttering long-lashed Bambi look and everything is just dandy. Until you look down a couple of hours later to see one of your falsies sititng on your chest… the worst things is you don’t know how long it’s been there, CRINGE.
The art of contouring
You spend hours attempting the contoured make-up look so your cheekbones are perfectly scuplted. A great night is had by all, laughs are had and photos are taken. All is right with the world until you see the Facebook tags piling up… and the end result of your contouring isn’t exactly what you had hoped for…
Runny eyeliner
Eyeliner can be difficult to apply at the best of times, liquid goes everywhere no matter how many times you attempt an even line. Pencil is easier but it can go horribly wrong especially if your eyes are in any way sensitive. This means watery eyes and black rivulets running down your cheeks… such an attractive look. You may have to fend off questions like “Are you okay? You look like you’ve been crying?”.
