Queer Eye’s Jonathan van Ness reveals why you shouldn’t sleep with your hair down

Jonathan van Ness has shared a hair care hack that is set to change the condition of your locks.

The Queer Eye star revealed one habit many of us are guilty of that is actually causing more damage to our hair than we realise.

He explained that one thing you should never do is sleep with your hair down. Sleeping with your gruaig in a ponytail or bun may seem like a bad idea, but it can actually improve your hair.

Van Ness explained how sleeping with your hair down puts the pressure of your body’s weight on your locks.

The hairdresser explained that sleeping like this causes damage.

“You’re getting your hair trapped between your body heat [and] the pillow,” he continued.

“You know how sometimes you wake up it’s just, like, really hot. You’re like ‘Ooh, it’s steamy in here’. That is like just keeping a 100-degree flat iron just pressed on your ends.”

“Your ends are like, you know, a couple of years old. This is probably three-year-old hair down here,” Van Ness explained.

“So, sleeping with hair for eight hours a night pressed up against the warmth of your body heat and the friction of your sheets – it just creates a rubbing friction tension which, ultimately, makes your ends disintegrate or just kind of break off because it’s just too much heat.”

What to do with your hair at night

The Queer Eye star suggested sleeping with your locks tied up in a loose bun. You’ll still be comfortable but you’ll also be protecting your gruaig from any additional damage as you sleep.

He also recommended investing in a silk scrunchie to tie your locks up so if anyone needs us we’ll be shopping for more accessories we can’t afford.
