We’re a bit obsessed with creating the perfect black eyeliner flick here at Her.ie. No matter what outfit you’re wearing or how bad a hair day you’re having, successfully managing to create the perfect eyeliner flick can instantly transform your day from a bad into a good one!
Regardless of how many different products you pine after or how many expensive brushes you purchase, practice is the only thing that will help you perfect your technique but that being said, the product you use does have a lot to do with the end result. Without sounding like some sort of demented beauty Goldielocks, if you use a liner that’s too dry your flick will lack precision, too wet and it’ll go all over the place but if you get it just right, a sexy sultry flick is nearly guaranteed!
Whether you’re a liquid liner purist or are more open to the latest liner inventions, there is an abundance of different liner methods available so it’s just a case of trying a couple out and deciding what suits you best.
You don’t have to use liquid eyeliner:
Liquid eyeliner can be fiddly to use and dries super quickly so unless you have an extremely steady hand, it’s kind of impossible to do it yourself. If you’re more comfortable using a pencil try a gel formula which will give the look of a liquid liner but will allow you extra time to manipulate the line.
For precision, we’re loving this new Clarins product. The tip allows you to apply a template of dots in a series of three’s which are then filled in. Fool proof! Clarins Three Dot Eyeliner, €24
Always go for jet-black:
No matter what style of liner you go for, it has to be jet-black. Good liner only needs to be applied once and anything too transparent will need to be applied over and over which will result in a clumsy, chunky looking flick!
This high-pigment pencil liner mimics the effect of a gel and is great for beginners. Avon SuperShock Gel Liner, €8
Work from the inside out:
Always start your flick at the inner corner of the eye and work outwards. This will create a naturally tapered effect so you can angle the flick upwards at the outer corner. How far or dramatic you make the flick is up to you.
It’s essentially a marker and is so easy to use, especially if you don’t have a lot of time in the mornings or if you apply your slap on-the-go! L’Oreal Superliner Perfect Slim, €12
From a subtle hint of a flick to a full-on Amy Winehouse inspired look, once you know how to create the perfect flick, you’ll be able to do them all!
