‘One thing I wish I knew before using benzoyl peroxide for my acne’

Kat O'Connor

Acne treatment is never easy

I’ve been searching for something that would heal my acne for what feels like forever.

It’s a draining and pricey journey, but I refuse to give up on finding a treatment that works for me. I want my skin to look good but I also want it to be healthy. Having acne not only makes me feel self-conscious but it can have a knock-on effect on my mental health too.

It’s something I’ve dealt with since I was a teenager but it has worsened in my late twenties.

Thankfully, my pharmacist suggested using Acnecide, and the reviews are pretty stellar.

I was feeling incredibly hopeful about using this product because it has benzoyl peroxide in it.

I’d also spoken to so many other acne-sufferers about it and they’ve praised this tub of gel.

Unfortunately, it comes with quite an irritating side effect- skin drier than the desert.

Has it helped clear up my acne? Without a doubt. I’ve only been using it for a couple of days, but my skin feels unbelievably dry now. So much so that putting makeup on makes it look even worse.

Experts suggest applying benzoyl peroxide products in the morning and at night, but I think it’s too much for my already sensitive skin. The product promises to unblock pores, blackheads, and whiteheads, but it’s extremely strong.

I’ve now realised that this is one product that doesn’t belong in my daily skincare routine. I’m going to start out by using it once a week and applying half a dozen layers of moisturiser to counteract the side effects.

The search for the holy-grail acne product continues.
