"Why Are We All So Obsessed With Boobs?" Mairead Farrell on Rosanna, Kate, and Topless vs. Tasteless

Two topless pictures dominated the headlines this week, and Today FM's Mairead Farrell just can not understand the fascination we have with boobs...

Two women dominated the news this week.

Both were photographed topless. One wanted it to happen and received a five-figure sum for it, the other didn't want it, but people are saying the photographer received a five-figure sum.

One will be Queen of England some day, and the other has already worn the crown of Miss World.

Both graced a magazine cover and received massive media attention.

So our very own Rosanna posed for the German edition of Playboy. Throughout the past week she’s had her fair few "knockers" publicly tweeting and writing things like "she doesn't need the money", "why is she doing this" etc. But she’s equally had lots of support too; "Go Rosie" " You are sex on legs" etc. Her very famous father has even come out and publicly supported her on his Facebook page.

Just across the water, the British media were hysterical about the topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge. The big difference is she didn't want these photos of her breasts shown to the world. She was just lounging in a back garden (albeit a very fancy one in Provence) applying sun cream to her husband’s back. It was a very private moment. As I looked at them, I felt a bit dirty... Like I was some peeping Tom (or female equivalent, a peeping Tammy?).

Why are we all so obsessed with boobs?

I can't understand it. Big, small, fake, real. Models, royals, soap stars, pop stars. Side cleavage, full cleavage, tit tape – we’ve all seen the pictures and read the stories.

I hate to burst bubbles here, but boobs are there for feeding babies!

However, I think it should be clean cut - if someone wants to show off their perfectly formed rack, great! Let's look and admire. But if someone clearly doesn't want to flash their cans then leave them alone! Rosanna’s pictures were chosen by her, so they are there to be enjoyed. She’s posing, pouting and styled- she looks great and as she said herself when's she's old and grey she can take down the Playboy edition and say: “Wow, I was a total hottie.”

Personally, mine will be staying covered… in the back garden and on Maldives beaches.

Have your say

I think obsession is a bit of a strong word Mairead and anyway, I think the obsession is largely media generated. I also think the obsession with body parts comes from both sides of the media gender as well as a flick through any of the publications largely aimed at women (Heat, Closer etc.) or women's magazines themselves (I promise they're my girlfriends!) will show that the obsession with body parts of the famous or not so famous comes from women too. The latest toned beach body or who has now got a fat ass is nearly always on the cover!
I guess we will never understand what floats the boat of the opposite sex, for example the female obsession with an over-hyped and poorly written book about the sexual pecadillos of a certain Mr. Grey is a mystery to me and many other guys I'd imagine.
Guys like boobs, shock horror. And I guess there is a fascination or curiosity with famous or previously unseen boobs. But surely it's a healthy thing for us to appreciate what I consider to be a beautiful part of a woman's body?
I think our appreciation of knockers should not be, ahem, knocked.
