Taking A Leap Of Faith: ‘Flying’ Irish Nun Plans To Celebrate Her Birthday By Doing A Charity Skydive

Sister Patricia Wall is doing the dive to raise awareness about depression and suicide in rural areas.

We’ve all heard the old saying about ‘taking a leap of faith’ but this nun is going one step further and it’s all for a good cause.

Sister Patricia Wall is planning to celebrate her 76th birthday with a charity skydive for AWARE and the Slieveardagh Rural Development.

Now, we don’t know about you but if we were celebrating such a big birthday, we’d do it with a nice meal and our feet fixed firmly to the ground, however the brave nun from Thurles wants to raise as much money as she can by doing the 10,000 foot drop.

Dubbed the ‘flying nun’ Sister Patricia wants to raise up to €150,000 for her chosen charities and has said that the easiest part of the entire thing will be jumping out of the plane (we beg to differ!).

“I think the easiest part will be the skydive itself – all these interviews and making a show of yourself will be the hard part,” said Sister Patricia, speaking to The Mirror.

Sister Patricia has been a member of the Presentation Order of Nuns since she was 17 years old and says that she’s doing the skydive because she wants to highlight some important issues in rural Ireland.

“I’m working in a rural area where there is a lot of isolation and an increase in depression and suicide,” said Sister Patricia.

The nun has already recieved medical clearance to do the jump and says that she can’t wait for the big day in May.

We have no words except fair play Sister Patricia – it’s a great thing that you’re doing for a great cause and we hope you raise even more money than you originally planned.
