We’ve been washing our hair wrong and chances are you have too

washing our hair wrong

Washing your day is one of those everyday tasks that you do without thinking but there’s more to the ‘good hair day’ science than you might think.

Personally, my hair is driving me around the bend (and back again) at present and as my sister’s a hairdresser, she tells me it’s down to product build-up and/or hard water.

However, there are also a number of steps I can take myself and it’s all down to how I’m washing my hair.

Much has been made of the idea of reverse washing, ideal for fine hair because conditioning at the end can prove too heavy for thinner locks.

However, aside from this concept which I personally can’t get my head around, there are a few other tips to consider.

In conversation with Harper Bazaar, London-based hairdresser Paul Windle gave some expert advice.

First up is the fact that we’re all using too much shampoo and all you really need is a little blob, think around the size of a €2 coin (waaaaay less than we currently use).

Instead of using a large amount in one go, split it in two and use less product. This does mean you’ll be in the shower for longer so remember to factor that in if you’re a morning hair washer.

Windle also mentions the fact that we can get a bit lazy when it comes to rinsing. This is the part that “takes the dirt away” so don’t rush this part (guilty as charged).

Finally, although you may be used to getting a lather when you shampoo, this isn’t strictly necessary. If your shampoo fails to produce a lather, it’s still working away to eliminate dirt and grime.
